What exactly does a doula do?

May 28, 2017

When  I tell people I'm a doula most of them say "oh, so you're like a midwife."  The short answer to that question is no. I don't do anything medical so no:

  • Cervical checks

  • Fetal monitoring

  • Blood pressure checks

  • Rupturing membranes

  • Delivering your baby

I also will not:

  • Speak for you

  • Make medical decisions on your behalf

  • Tell you what choices you need to make

  • Push you into doing something you're not comfortable with

My job is that of support. I will support the way YOU choose to have your baby in any way I can. I will do:

  • Acupressure

  • Massage

  • Breathing techniques

  • Position changes to help reduce pain/pressure

  • Give affirmations to help you stay focused

  • Work with your partner

  • Help clarify information given by the health care staff

I work for you. I have no agenda of my own. My job is to support you to help you get the labor you are hoping for. As with many things, labor is unpredictable. In cases where your birth plan may need to change, I help you and your partner navigate your way through those changes. My support is unwavering and you are my main focus. I want what you want - a healthy baby.

So for those of you wondering if you should hire a doula, think about this: once I arrive at the hospital or your home depending on when you feel that I'm needed, I'm there until the baby arrives. My shift doesn't end, I don't go home until you and your baby are resting comfortably. I am there to let your partner take a break and get a bite to eat, rest and make phone calls with updates if needed so you will never be left alone. So if this sounds like what you're looking for during your birthing experience I suggest checking out local well trained doulas in your area. I guarantee you won't regret it.
